Jonathan D. Secor, Director of Special Programs Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts www.mcla.edu For 28 of his 44 years Jonathan has worked in the creative sector as a producer, director, general manager, production manager and stage manager.
Jonathan is currently Director of Special Programs at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, where he has overseen the creation and implementation of Gallery 51, the Berkshire Cultural Resource Center and the Berkshire Hills Internship Program, as well as programming for the Patrons of the Arts series and other events on Campus. Prior to working at MCLA, Jonathan was the Artistic Director for the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington, MA, a 700 seat historic house. As Artistic Director he programmed over forty productions for their 2005-2007 seasons. From 1995 until the present his production company, Secor Productions, has produced concerts, dance, theater, large-scale site-specific performances, industrials, events and happenings, as well as serving as a design consultant. Past events include Songs of the Spirit and the Candlelight Concert for Remembrance and Hope at the Cathedral of St. John, the New York Beer Tasting Festival under the Brooklyn Bridge, Sham Mosher's Bessie Award-winning Shadow's Tearing, En Garde Art's Mystery School, the national tour of The Harlem Nutcracker, the Welcome Back to Brooklyn Festival, Harvest in the Square Food Tasting Festival, BAM's Hare Follies, John Barton's Shakespeare Workshops, Ford Motor and Drury Production Industrials and Corporate Meetings, and the Gay and Lesbian American Music Awards (GLAMA). Secor Productions served as the consulting firm for the design, construction, and outfitting of the four performing art spaces at the MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA. From it’s opening until 2005 Jonathan served as the Director of Performing Arts at MASS MoCA. As Director, he was responsible for the oversight of budget, staffing, and programming of 60-75 annual events, with a full time staff of 13, part-time of 26 and budget of $1.5 million. Jonathan oversaw the presentation of renowned artists such as Robert Lepage, Bill T. Jones, Steve Earle, Merce Cunningham, Sekou Sundiata, and Patti Smith, as well as rising artists such as Gloria Deluxe, Yasuko Yokoshi, Antony and the Johnsons, Carl Hancock Rux, and Rev. Billy & His Stop Shopping Choir. Jonathan developed an artist-in-residency program where artists such as Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, Shirin Neshatt, Urban Bush Women, Bang On A Can, DJ Spooky, Mabou Mines and Basel Twist could develop new work and a children’s performance series for the local public school system. From 1997 until 1998, Jonathan was General Manager for 651 an Arts Center in Brooklyn, NY. As General Manager he was responsible for the budgeting, staffing and scheduling of an 8 show season including Dance Women, Living Legends, (co-produced by Aaron Davis Hall and NJPAC) and Lost Jazz Shrines (co-presented by the Smithsonian). From the mid 1980’s until the mid 1990’s Jonathan worked as a production manager throughout the United States and Europe. Artists and institutions served include Celebrate Brooklyn, Arts at St. Ann’s, Orion Films, Donald Byrd, BAM, Manhattan Punch Line, PepsiCo Summerfare, 651 Arts Center, Nayland Blake, The Day Care Council of the City of New York, Dance Africa, GLAMA, John Kelly, On The Boards, Kings County Shakespeare Company, David Rousseve and Ralph Lemon. Jonathan started his professional career as a stage manager in 1979. He has stage managed hundreds of productions including working with Yale Repertory Theater, Center Stage Theater, The Old Globe Theater, Sid Caesar and Company- (Broadway), WNET’s Broadway Sings: The Music of Jule Styne (Television), The Alliance Theater, Philadanco, The McCarter Theater, Jennifer Muller & The WORKS, Manhattan Punch Line, BAM, Columbia Artists, The Dallas Opera Company, The San Francisco Opera Company, The Cohoes Music Hall, The Woodstock Playhouse, The Actor’s & Directors Theater, The Actor’s Studio and Equity Library Theater. Raised in New York City, Jonathan holds a Bachelor in Fine Arts with Honors in theater design and technology from SUNY Purchase and has taken 8 credits towards a Masters of Divinity at Union Theological Seminary. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in management at the Yale School of Drama, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, and SUNY Purchase. Jonathan resides in Massachusetts on Florida Mountain with his wife, Ana Maria, and two daughters, Christina and Alegra.
