MCLA Gallery 51: If By Line
Beginning Thursday, May 26, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) Gallery 51 presents "If By Line," featuring recent work by John Breiner, Alexis Grabowski and Joshua Vrysen.
An opening reception, free and open to the public, will be held on Thursday, May 26, 5-7 p.m.
John Breiner is a Brooklyn-based artist who constructs dense compositions of imagery by layering photocopy transfers of his own drawings onto a variety of surfaces. In September 2010, MCLA Gallery 51 presented "Quantum Spectrum," a show of work rooted in street art curated by Breiner which included only one piece by the artist, but the entire show revealed his street art sensibilities. This is a chance to see a larger body of Breiner's work, much of which was created during a hyper-productive winter in Canada through a self-imposed hiatus from New York.
Alexis Grabowski, currently based in Cambridge, NY, is a graduate of Alfred University and has spent the past year and a half developing a body of rapidograph ink drawings. After a series of residencies, as well as a regimented studio practice, Grabowski has assembled a significant body of obsessively intricate drawings; landscapes of accumulated lines caught between abstraction and representation, between explosion and collapse. "If By Line" will be the first gallery show of this new body of work.
Joshua Vrysen, from Easthampton, MA, creates sometimes-uncomfortable, sometimes-humorous drawings with a distinct compositional sense of space and line. Often displayed in grid fashion his modest-scaled pencil drawings take on a wall-sized installation presence. Vrysen also hand prints and assembles books of his drawings, several of which will be included in the exhibition.
"Each of the artists in this exhibition have a distinct manner in which they are using the act of drawing to create exciting imagery" said curator and Gallery 51 Manager Ven Voisey, "this is an exhibition of three different, but complimentary directions."
"If By Line" remains on view through June 19. MCLA Gallery 51 is at 51 Main St. in North Adams and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 413-664-8718, or go to www.mcla.edu/Gallery51.
