Seeking a Part-time Gallery Manager for MCLA Gallery 51. MCLA Gallery 51, run by the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts since 2005, presents work from a wide range of emerging and mid-career contemporary artists. The gallery hosts ten exhibitions each year and countless events and happenings. Staffed by mostly student workers, MCLA Gallery 51 provides students with hands-on experience in the day-to-day operations of a gallery. MCLA Gallery 51 is a project of MCLA's Berkshire Cultural Resource Center.
This position reports to the director of MCLA's Berkshire Cultural Resource Center, and is located at MCLA Gallery 51, 51 Main St. North Adams, MA. This job provides an opportunity to be part of a growing vibrant arts scene, work with MCLA art and art management students and faculty and further ones arts administration and art gallery retail experience.
The Gallery Manager will be responsible for most aspects of running a professional art gallery, including reviewing prospective works of art, contacting and scheduling artists, and preparing artist contracts. He/she will help to identify guest curators as well as personally curate and plan shows. Installing and taking down exhibits, as well as the packing, and shipping/returning art-work are required. Other duties include the maintenance artist database, gallery websites and coordination of the design and printing of promotional materials and press releases.
This position will train the MCLA student gallery attendants on all gallery procedures (including opening and closing, greeting visitors, handling art, installation of work, sales and shipping), schedule the desk coverage, build relationships with artists and existing/potential customers, work collaboratively with MCLA faculty and staff, and creatively work to connect the gallery to the greater North Adams / Berkshire County community.
The gallery manager is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the gallery spaces, including gallery, back room and downstairs prep areas.
The position is typically two days a week, more days as needed for installs of new exhibitions. The position is a non-benefited position and pays approximately $12,000 a year.
The qualified candidate should have a minimum of a bachelor's degree an art related field or have comparable job experience in the arts. They should be responsible and reliable, be a team player, able to multi-task, able to talk knowledgably about the artists and the art. The candidate should be familiar with art handling and installation procedures. Sales skills are desirable and the candidate must interact with the public in a friendly and professional manner. Education experience desired; must be patient and have a willingness to teach and mentor students and interns working in the gallery. Computer, design, including basic Adobe photoshop and illustrator, and social media skills desired. Knowledge of audio/visual devices a plus. Most of all, the candidate must be prepared to be part of a small hard working team, often doing too much with too little, but always working to advance the role of art and artists in society.
