Employment
Want to work at the Computer Help Desk? Here are the ins and outs of the job:
What is an OCCC and what do they do?
OCCC is short for 'On-Campus Computer Consultant'. OCCCs are responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Helpdesk and the labs, specifically:
- Instructing and assisting users with lab equipment and software use.
- Performing Campus Residence Network Installations on student-owned computers.
- Providing support for campus computing via telephone and in-person assistance.
- Maintaining lab equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
What do I need to know to be an OCCC?
There are four OCCC "titles" at the Computer Helpdesk - Novice OCCC, Junior OCCC, OCCC, and Senior OCCC. Titles are granted based upon content area knowledge, time in service to the Helpdesk, and annual reviews. The two entry-level titles are Novice OCCC and Junior OCCC, based upon the experience of the employee being hired. While the job description (and pay) increases at each title, the core of the requirements is:
- A significant level of computer skill and experience (including installing computer peripherals and diagnosing basic hardware and software problems).
- Expertise with campus software (Pine E-mail, Microsoft Office, Netscape, etc.).
- The ability to be trained in residence network installations processes.
- Work well in a cooperative environment, as well as individually; communicate effectively with less advanced users; and have positive interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with Macintosh computers a plus.
What does the OCCC job pay?
That depends upon content area knowledge, time in service to the Helpdesk, and annual reviews. Below are some examples:
- Employee A applies for and gets a job at the Helpdesk. This person has all the required skills and experience, and qualifies for the 'Junior OCCC' title. This person would receive 111% of minimum wage (currently about $7.50).
- Employee B applies for and gets a job at the Helpdesk. This person is lacking some of the basic skills and experience, and qualifies for the 'Novice OCCC' title. This person would receive 100% of minimum wage (currently $6.75).
- Employee C is a senior, has worked for the desk for 3 years, is an expert at the job and can also train new-hires. As this person will likely be a 'Senior OCCC', and also likely has a year in the title, he or she would receive 136% of minimum wage (currently about $9.25).
So, if you are a dedicated employee who is familiar with the job, you have the capability to make a fair sum of money for a student job. Currently, hourly wages range from $6.75 to $9.25.
