FAQ for Owners of a MCLA/Dell Laptop
Listed below are a few common issues that have been encountered by students who have purchased a laptop through the MCLA/Dell laptop program.
No matter what I do, my Sophos Antivirus icon looks like this: and when I
hover my mouse over it a box pops-up that reads "Update has failed"
First, be assured that Sophos IS up to date. You can check this by opening Sophos (right-click the
icon and choose "Open Sophos Antivirus"). The time of the latest successful update is listed in the
upper-lefthand corner of the screen.
This happens because Sophos Antivirus is configured to update from a college server first. This server is available on campus only.
When Sophos fails to see this server, it will connect to the Sophos website and download the update.
Due to this unique configuration the icon will indicate that the update has failed even when Sophos was able to contact the secondary
server.
What kinds of wireless networks can I connect to with my laptop?
Your laptop is capable of connecting to all of the major standards for WiFi access. In the alphabet soup version, your laptop can connect
to networks that use the 802.11a, 802.11b or 802.11g standards.
My computer came bundled with a network cable, but it doesn't fit the wiring in my house.
Generally, this means that you're in need of a modem cable. Modems use the kind of cable you would use to connect your telephone to the
wall jack.
