Freshmen Placement Testing
In order to enhance academic advising and facilitate students' enrollment in the most appropriate entery level courses, entering freshmen and transfers entering with 12 or fewer credits, none of which meet MCLA's writing and mathematics requirement will take placement tests in four areas: mathematics, either Accuplacer Elementary Algebra or MCLA's mathematics test. The determination of which test is based on a review of academic history. writing, reading, and modern language. Students are then placed in courses in each of these areas or waived of the associated requirement. In terms of modern language, entering freshmen or transfers who have completed the equivalent of four years of the same modern language in high school are waived of MCLA's modern language requirement. These students must submit a copy of an official high school transcript showing the equivalent of four years of language or a copy of an official transcript from another college which shows that the student has completed modern language at the 102 level in college. Tests for entering freshmen and transfers are offered during the New Student Orientation Programs. In addition, currently enrolled students will have the opportunity to take placement tests in modern language and computer technology problem solving (CCCL 100) during the Add/Drop period prior to registering for the subsequent semester. Based on the results, students may be placed in a 101 or 102 level modern langauage and the CCCL 100 course. Students who demonstrate proficiency in modern language at the 102 level are waived of the College's modern langauge requirement. Students who demonstrate a proficiencey in Microsoft Office Suite, including sections on Word, Access, Excel and Power Point are waived of the College's compter technology and problem solving requierment. Students who are waived of either modern language or the computer technology and problem solving requirement, do not receive credit for the course(s), but are allowed to earn these credits in other areas.
