"Transferring to MCLA was one of the greatest decisions I ever made. Being able to learn from and connect with the faculty and staff equipped me with greater networking capabilities/skills and the opportunity to use them outside of the institution, preparing me for the road ahead. Taking part and engaging in different clubs and organizations on campus helped to shape and guide me for countless opportunities."

Anne Goodwin  A. Goodwin at the Liquid Jungle Lab, Panama

EDUCATION:

  • Ph.D. 2004, Harvard University, Division of Medical Sciences (Experimental Pathology)
  • B.A. 1995, Albion College (Biology and German)

COURSES:

  • Zoology
  • Animal Physiology
  • Marine Biology
  • Concepts in Biology

RESEARCH INTERESTS:

My research currently focuses on the biology of sea squirts and the sea anemone Aiptasia.  Aiptasia are fast-growing and house photosynthetic protozoans of the genus Symbiodinium.  The Aiptasia are used in laboratory exercises in my Zoology and Animal Physiology classes, and two undergraduate students are conducting research with these animals this semester.  The first student is examining how environmental factors affect the photosynthetic symbionts, and the second student is identifying the neurotransmitters that regulate tentacle contraction in Aiptasia. Both students will present their work at an undergraduate research conference in April.

I am also conducting field research focusing on the distribution and biology of sea squirts, a type of marine invertebrate.  I recently traveled to Panama to document populations of sea squirts, and intend to return to the field site in coming years, with undergraduate students.  I will study the pH defenses of the sea squirt Didemnum this summer, and will conduct further laboratory research on sea squirt biology - including development of the sea squirt vascular system - in future semesters.  This research will be conducted with the assistance of MCLA students.
