Designing Interdisciplinary Math/Science Instruction

In an inquiry-based study, participants will gather data in their local environments, contribute the data to a research database used by professional scientists, and, using technology, learn to analyze and interpret data to answer their own questions.

Two class meetings to be arranged. Five

Writing to Learn in the Content Areas

Participants design Informal writing and learning activities
that help students understand complex ideas in history, math, cience, or English. Focus will be on the kinds of critical reading and
thinking tasks included on the MCAS in the content areas.

Designing Earth Science Instruction

Participants will explore the Berkshire Mountains as an inquiry- based, place-based middle school Earth Science topic. We will explore mapping, plate tectonics, rock cycles, and changes in topography over time, and gather both qualitative and quantitative
data.

Designing Research Assignments

Using the “Bix6” Information Skills model, participants design research tasks to help their students locate, evaluate, organize, synthesize, and communicate information. Participants also examine online tools useful for research, such as QuestGarden,
Noodletools, Notestar, and Deli.ci.ous.
