His research centered on Geometric Group Theory, exploring places where algebra and geometry meet.

He is interested in the history of mathematics, geometry, topology, and analysis. Especially fun are the classes he teaches for Math for the Liberal Arts, in which an overview of all of mathematics is presented with a minimum of technical details.

Other interests include philosophy, literature, travel, and people.
