Why Study Philosophy?
(five excellent reasons)

Φ1. It's a real education. Philosophy gives you skills and habits that complement almost any career, and enhance every aspect of the life choices that you make. These skills include analytic and synthetic thinking; questioning and critique; clear and systematic communication and dialogue; powerful and effective writing; and an appreciation for history and the life of the mind and heart.

2. It makes you think. In application, philosophy links ancient questions and ideas with current concerns and insights unconstrained by narrow specialization, allowing for multiple, informed perspectives on matters of universal concern. As the American philosopher George Santayana put it: "Those who do not remember the history of philosophy are condemned to repeat it!"

3. It's user-friendly. Most philosophy classes at MCLA are quite small and personal; the department emphasizes close dialogue between professors and students and flexible, individual attention to students' intellectual development. Where else can you get that kind of support and attention at public-college prices?

4. It helps you get a job. Although not many philosophy students go on to teach in the field, a philosophy major or minor is excellent preparation for nearly every profession. Philosophy graduates have succeeded exceptionally well in Law, Medicine, Business and many other fields. Employers and professional programs of all sorts recognize that philosophy students are thoughtful, effective, and educable employees.

5. It helps you get a life. You need a degree, but we can help ensure that you get an education as well. Philosophy gives you the tools and habits to go on asking questions, challenging assumptions and exploring new ideas in everything you do, all your life.
