Every summer, the first-year class is encouraged to read a book in common that serves as the basis for several events when the term begins in September. During this Fall Orientation, entering students will meet in small groups with members of the MCLA faculty to discuss the summer reading, Nine Hills to Nambonkaha.
In preparation for that discussion, you are encouraged to read -- and maybe even reread parts -- of Nine Hills to Nambonkaha in anticipation of a formal discussion. We also hope that the book will stimulate conversation and questions throughout the fall (some courses will incorporate the book into the syllabus).
On Sept. 6, the college will also welcome the author, Sarah Erdman, to campus to discuss with us her book and her experiences as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Please come prepared to ask her questions . . . . and remember to bring your book for the signing reception.
You will probably want to keep a journal as you read in which you record your first reactions to the narrative. Keep track of your questions as they emerge and see if the book answers those questions as it unfolds.
And . . . there is the essay contest. You may wish to take your questions and responses to the book and compose an essay that uses one the essay contest questions as its springboard.
