This will include general administrative support to the staff, work on exhibits, research, and assistance to the education curator. The position provides a student interested in museum work an opportunity to experience a wide variety of museum functions. BMAC is a a small, growing, non-collecting contemporary art museum where departments are not strictly separated, and staff and volunteers work as a team to produce and install exhibits, offering a range of training not available in larger museums. The working environment is fast-paced, friendly, and cooperative. The mission statement of BMAC is "to present arts and ideas in ways that inspire, educate, and engage people of all ages."
Administration: General Administration assistance will include telephone answering, database upkeep, marketing support, membership and event mailings, website maintenance, writing press releases, and more.
Exhibits: Work behind the scenes on the installation, deinstallation, and upkeep of exhibits; serve as a substitute gallery greeter; help with openings and public functions; and more. Interns may choose to attend Exhibition Committee meetings.
Research: Online research may include finding information on a piece of art, researching gift shop merchandise, updating press lists, updating and expanding exhibit and event listings, updating internship listings, contacting exhibiting artists about their publications, and other projects as needed.
Education: Education tasks may include setting up for school visits, preparing materials for activities, setting up for and staffing public lectures, assisting at workshops, and providing assistance to the education curator as requested. Interns may learn about being a Museum docent (tour guide) and may act as a docent-in-training during Museum tours as well as participate in program evaluation. | | Required Skills | | The student applying for this position should have a background in museum studies, art history or interest in studio arts. Work experience in an office is helpful. Applicants with technical skills (graphic arts, design, etc.) will receive strong consideration. Competency working in a team is essential. Applicants must possess good verbal communication skills, be flexible and composed under stress, have good organizational skill and be attentive to detail, and be able to compose written materials quickly and easily. Competency with PC computers is a must. Knowledge of Lotus Approach, Adobe Photoshop, and Dreamweaver is helpful. Other general computer experience is appreciated. Any interested student may apply if s/he is a quick learner, capable problem solver, and willing to undertake a wide variety of tasks.
