MISSION

IS183 is a non-profit community art school encouraging people of all ages, means and skill levels to enrich their lives through hands-on experience in the visual arts.

All classes are open to the public at all skill levels; beginners welcome! Many classes are structured for beginners with small class sizes; emphasis is on individualized instruction. Classes are available for children and adults, and most adult classes are open to teenagers, as well.
Required Skills
Preference is given to college students and those considering an art education career. Applicants should have experience in the visual arts, an interest in art education, and be able to demonstrate experience working with children. Interns will be expected to supervise students in specific age groups ranging from 3-14 years and interact with parents, staff, faculty, and fellow interns, so strong interpersonal skills are a must. Interns may be eligible to receive academic credit. In addition, IS183 will provide references for your future employment/academic pursuits upon request, dependent on performance.

There are three levels of intern:

Junior Intern Program

A volunteer internship program for students ages 15-17 who have attended camp and come with high recommendation from IS183 faculty. Two to eight week internships are available with reduced hours. Interns have the opportunity to audit one evening or weekend adult class.

Teaching Assistant Intern Program

For students ages 17 and above who are considering an art education career, have previous work experience, and previous experience working with children. Two to eight week internships, five days a week, 8:30-4:30, are available. Interns will assist students and teachers in IS183s summer camp classrooms, set up student art shows, and gain office experience weekly. Interns will receive a $100 weekly stipend and have the opportunity to audit one evening or weekend adult class.

Teaching Institute Pre-Practicum Program

For college students and graduates who are interested in teaching the arts but have no prior experience or education degree. During this 6-week program interns will gain experience in teaching by assisting and observing in our youth summer camps, attending weekly classes, attending seminar series, reflecting on your experiences, and talking with faculty, students, and peers about their teaching and learning experiences. You will gain experience in classroom management, lesson planning, curriculum development, and effective teaching strategies.

All Teaching Interns have the opportunity to audit one evening or weekend adult class.
