Intern - Tupelo Press, North Adams, MA
Position's Title
Intern - Tupelo Press, North Adams, MA
Number of Openings
4
Description
Tupelo Press employs student interns in the North Adams area of the Berkshires in western Massachusetts. Applicants are considered on a rolling basis. At this time, all intern positions are unpaid. Work is completed at our headquarters in the Eclipse Mill in North Adams, a community of artists in a lovely, historic mill building. This is a chance for students interested in publishing to explore what goes on behind the scenes. Successful interns will gain valuable knowledge about the inner workings of the publishing industry.

Company Profile

Tupelo Press is an award winning independent literary press that publishes fine fiction, nonfiction, and poetry in books that are a joy to hold as well as read. We are a nonprofit corporation and rely on public support to carry out our mission of extraordinary work that may be outside the realm of large commercial publishers. We publish both well-known and emerging authors, and have over 100 books in print. Tupelo Press is a recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and other charitable organizations.

Duties

Interns will be involved in all aspects of the press and its activities. Responsibilities will include: processing manuscript submissions, book order fulfillment, maintaining databases, updating website and social media content, research on funding opportunities and other topics, publicity and public relations support, customer and author support, filing, copying, etc. Though there may be some copy-editing and manuscript processing opportunities available, this is largely a managerial internship, not an editorial one. It is our hope that by learning many of the business and organizational aspects of publishing, our interns will be better prepared for a career in the industry.

Salary/Hours

This is an unpaid, part-time internship. Generally interns work 10-15 hours per week during the school year (spring or fall semester) or 20-30 hours per week in the summer. Summer sessions typically run 4, 6, or 8 weeks. We can work with colleges and universities to award college credit. Housing is not provided, but may be found in the local area. Hours are extremely flexible, within the Monday-Friday 8-4 framework.
Required Skills
The ideal intern candidates will have basic computer and internet research skills, excellent written and verbal communications and interpersonal skills, the ability to work well individually and with others, an eye for detail, good judgment, and a willingness to take initiative. An interest in business management, database management, data entry, bookkeeping and accounting, website design, e-books, or book publicity is considered a plus. A pleasant and dedicated attitude is a must.
