Smith College is accepting applications for an Area Coordinator. Reporting to the Director of Residence Life, the Area Coordinator is responsible for one of 6 areas of campus housing approximately 380 - 430 students; supervises student staff (head residents/house coordinators and house community advisors); coordinates programming, counseling, and crisis intervention and on-call coverage; and directs the training and evaluation of staff and advisement of elected house presidents. T

This is a required live-on position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide direct supervision, support and evaluation of assigned staff, assist in the planning and implementation of training programs and the selection process of residence life staff; assist with establishing written policies, procedures, and protocols within the department.

Provide basic counseling for students and make appropriate referrals as necessary; provide crisis intervention during emergency situations; assist with individual and group concerns regarding conflict resolution and mediation of problems and issues. Be visible, available and approachable to support students, elected house leaders and residence life staff. Communicate and interpret college policies to students and staff and make appropriate referrals to the College Judicial Board as necessary. Assist student staff in planning and developing student centered programs and services that foster dialogue and interactions between faculty, staff and students; assist student staff and house leaders in developing educational and social programs that foster house community/unity and programs based on house needs; assist the department in developing communication/conflict resolution, multicultural and social justice workshops and interventions within the houses; serve as an advisor to house leaders and social chairs.

Manage an area office space; supervise and hire a student assistant; follow-up on all administrative paperwork; respond to email and phone inquiries and maintain confidentiality; assist department with housing process; participate in weekly departmental and class deans meetings, retreats, strategic planning and goal setting for the department and student affairs; develop an awareness and understanding of the current trends and practices in residence life and student affairs by attending seminars/workshops and reading appropriate publications; perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree plus two years relevant residence life experience or equivalent combination of education and experience; Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel Administration or related area preferred.

Skills: Experience in social justice/multicultural and women's education with a focus on education and training; excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills; good judgment, ability to interact with diverse constituencies; and can work effectively individually and as a team member.
