"I really wanted to attend an institution that was somewhat of a community -- something small -- and to connect with professors and with the administration and have them know my name. And, because of MCLA's internship program, I was able to get my foot in the door at a very prominent company which jump-started my career."

Funding for the sciences: a critical investment
By now, you may have read or heard about the April 25, Boston Globe editorial by Scot Lehigh referencing the Life Science Bill and State Representative Daniel Bosley '76. As an alum, Dan has represented his alma mater with distinction, working passionately and tirelessly to advocate for funding for a Center for Science and Innovation at MCLA.

Between Representative Bosley's Life Sciences Bill, and Governor Patrick's capital bond bill for higher education, MCLA stands on the cusp of significant, and much needed, investment in our science facilities and programs. The Center for Science and Innovation will be the first new academic space on the MCLA campus in nearly 40 years. It will address pressing needs for laboratory and program space at the College to support the expansion of science programs. It will be a resource for faculty, students, community members, and citizens and employers throughout the Commonwealth.

As a champion for public higher education in Berkshire County, Representative Bosley is part of a Berkshire County legislative delegation that works in close concert to assess and respond to the needs of MCLA, the students who attend the College, and the employers and businesses (both within the county and across the Commonwealth) who hire our graduates. Representative Bosley, along with Representatives Guyer, Pignatelli, and Speranzo, and Senator Downing, work diligently on behalf of MCLA and the county. Thank you to these leaders for their continued support and advocacy as these bills make their way through the legislature.

Notre Dame property
The MCLA Foundation is working to purchase the former Notre Dame church rectory on East Main Street from the City of North Adams. We are excited at the prospect of having more space and about this move downtown, which will further connect the College with the community. When the purchase is finalized and renovations to the building are complete later this summer, the rectory will provide office space for the MCLA Advancement Office (which is home to the MCLA Foundation, Alumni Relations, and fundraising staff) as well as provide event, gathering, and meeting space for alumni of the College.

MCLA pays tribute to Bill Seeley
On Thursday, April 24, Nobel Prize recipient Dr. William Moomaw delivered this year's Professor Lawrence H. Vadnais Environmental Issues Lecture, "Moving Towards a Sustainable Future." In addition to providing insight on the challenges and opportunities of environmental sustainability, the event also brought the College community together to celebrate and remember the life and career of Professor Bill Seeley, who passed away last fall. President Grant, Vice President of Academic Affairs Steve Green, Professor Adrienne Wootters, Bernie Clairmont '76, Chris Field '08 and Bill Seeley's son Jeffrey all shared remembrances of Bill during the memorial. During the program a plaque was presented to be hung in the Physics Department acknowledging Bill's years of service to the College.

Alumni panelists share stories of life after college
On Tuesday, April 22, the Advancement Office and the Student Development Office welcomed Christina Barrett '03, Director of Marketing and Communications for the Berkshire Chamber of Commerce; David Ortendahl '05, MCLA Public Policy Planning Group Coordinator; and iBerkshires senior reporter Jennifer Thomas '07, to talk about the transition from graduation to graduate school and careers.

On Tuesday, April 29, the Department of Business Administration and Economics and the Advancement Office presented an alumni panel discussion. Four alumni - Merrill Lynch Financial Advisor Brian Astorino '00; Kevin Barbary '85, Principal Owner of Office Resources, Inc.; MCLA treasurer Gerald Desmarais '74; and Elizabeth Mach '79, Assistant Vice President and Marketing Officer with Berkshire Bank - discussed their lives and career paths and shared advice with students on how to make the most of their time at MCLA and beyond. This panel was made possible through the Jacob and Dora Wineberg Entrepreneurial Studies Endowment.

Thank you to our alumni for sharing so generously of their time and expertise, and to Dr. Nancy Ovitsky for organizing the Business Department panel.
