"I received a great education from MCLA that laid the groundwork for me to succeed at law school. I use the skills I learned at MCLA, especially in the area of research and writing, on a daily basis and still speak with many of my former professors. It is not every school where you can create such a lasting bond with the professors and community. The strong community bond found at MCLA was a factor in my husband (Scott Lord ’98) and my decision to attend MCLA and our desire to remain involved with MCLA after graduation."

During his visit he met with some of our faculty, staff, students, members of our Board of Trustees, local educators, and area legislators. Secretary Reville left here with a promise to return and a deeper understanding of the work that we are doing, the mission of MCLA and the many initiatives that are happening in the Berkshires.

Students arrive to begin fall semester
First Days for the 2008-2009 academic year began on Sunday, August 31. On Sunday and Monday, some 335 freshman and 150 transfer students moved into their residences. Upper class and returning students came back to campus on September 1. In addition to moving in, new students participated in community service projects in and around North Adams and nearly 90 students took part in the annual hike up Mount Greylock. After these events, everyone met up at Zavattaro Athletic Complex for a picnic lunch.

Thank you to Alumni Board member Buffy Lord '98 for assisting the Alumni Office in welcoming the new students.  At least five alumni were on campus to move their students into the dorms.

MCLA Golf Classic
On September 15, MCLA held the 12th annual Golf Classic.  This event brings together area businesses, community members and MCLA staff and alumni for a day of golfing to raise funds for MCLA's athletic program. This year's honoree was Mayor John Barrett III, class of 1969. We had 148 golfers and a capacity crowd at dinner where we recognized the Mayor and all he has done in support of public education in North Adams and at the College. The event brought in a record number of sponsors and players and raised $24,000 for Athletics.

James McBride visits campus
Author and musician James McBride came to campus on Wednesday, September 17 to discuss his memoir, The Color of Water, this summer's reading selection for all incoming students.

Alumni in China
Recently, Alexandra Woolner and Katie Lorenz, MCLA alumnae from the class of 2007, paid President Grant a visit. Alex and Katie, along with fellow 2007 alums Chris Gauthier and Nate Hussey, spent the past year teaching at the University of Hebei in Boading, China. They report that they had a terrific experience, and Alex has plans to return in the fall for another year at Hebei!
