Branch Gallery Welcomes Artist Matt Phillips

08/28/2013

NORTH ADAMS, MASS. - Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts' (MCLA) Berkshire Cultural Resource Center (BCRC) will welcome artist Matt Phillips to the Branch Gallery on Thursday, Aug. 29,, when he will present the exhibition "Both, And: Recent Paintings" as part of DownStreet Art.

The public is invited to attend a free opening reception at Branch Gallery on Thursday, Aug. 29, at 18 Holden St. in North Adams, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Phillips' paintings are a forum of different thoughts, decisions, revisions and compromises. In his work, ideas exist as colors, shapes and forms. These discrete elements are stacked, overlapped, propped and rested upon one another.

"Matt Phillips wears generations of modernist painting theory like a pair of old jeans; the ones he absent-mindedly cleans a brush tip on as he creates works of breath-taking beauty and seemingly effortless complexity" said John Stomberg, curator of "Both, And: Recent Paintings."

Florence Finch Abbott, director of Mount Holyoke College Art Museum, said, "In equal parts, his work inspires and intrigues. I am absolutely thrilled that he is participating in DownStreet Arts this summer. The selection of paintings, including new works, is fabulous."

Phillips~was born in Atlanta, Ga., in 1979. He received a BFA from Hampshire College and his MFA from Boston University. He has had numerous exhibitions in the United States and internationally, including solo shows in both Los Angeles and New York, such as his latest show "this, and then" at Steven Harvey Projects (2013).~

Recent group exhibitions include "Correspondence I" at Tiger Strikes Asteroid (Philadelphia), "The Jam" at Steven Harvey Projects (New York), "The Irreconcilable" at the Spaceship at Ha Yarkon 70 (Tel Aviv), and a survey of small paintings presented at the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum. Phillips teaches painting at Mt. Holyoke College. He is a Brooklyn-based painter.

"Both, And: Recent Paintings" will be open from noon to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays. The exhibit will be on view until Sept. 22.
