MCLA Welcomes New Faculty Members

NORTH ADAMS, MASS.  - Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) recently welcomed six new professors to campus. A seventh new professor will join the campus in January 2014.

Dr. Mariana Bolívar Rubín, joins MCLA's Department of Modern Language as an assistant professor of Spanish. She comes to the College from the University of Colorado, where she was a graduate instructor. Rubín earned her master's degree in foreign languages from Colorado State University, and her bachelor's degree in English and Afro-American literature from Colorado State University.

Dr. Karen Cardozo joined MCLA as an assistant professor of interdisciplinary studies. She comes to the College from UMASS-Amherst, where she served as an adjunct faculty member, visiting assistant professor and an assistant professor. She earned her Ph.D. in English/American studies from UMASS-Amherst, her M.Ed. in higher education administration, planning and social policy from Harvard University, and her Bachelor of Arts degree from Haverford College in Haverford, Pa.

Dr. Carolyn Dehner joins MCLA as an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry. She comes to the College from Smith College, where she was a McPherson postdoctoral fellow. She earned her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Ind., and her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New York-Geneseo.

Dr. David Zachary Finch joined the College's Department of English/Communications as an assistant professor. He comes to MCLA from Dartmouth College, where he was a visiting lecturer. He earned his Ph.D. in English from the State University of New York-Buffalo, his Master's of Fine Art in poetry from the Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers in Asheville, N.C., and his Bachelor of Arts degree in English and creative writing from Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.

Duy Nguyen joins MCLA as an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics. He last was a graduate student instructor and a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. Nguyen earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Georgia, a Master of Science degree from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, and a Bachelor of Science degree in math and computer science from Ho Chi Minh City University of Science in Vietnam.

Dr. James (Ben) Taylor joined the College's Department of History/Political Science and Public Policy/Geography as an assistant professor of political science and public policy. He comes to MCLA from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Ga., where he was an instructor. He earned his Ph.D., master's degree and his bachelor's degree in political science from Georgia State University.

In addition, Dr. Laura Yang will return to MCLA in January 2014 when she joins our Department of Business Administration as an associate professor. She will come to the College from the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade, where she is an associate professor of economics, the director of the Professional Development Center, and dean of the School of Internal Education. She earned her Ph.D. in economics from the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences in Shanghai, China, her master's degree in economics from the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade, and her Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Nanjing University in China.
