MCLA Wins 2010 American Cancer Society Community Partner Award for Berkshire County
NORTH ADAMS, MASS. - On Friday, April 30, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) will receive the 2010 American Cancer Society Community Partner award for Berkshire County for its dedication to the Society and commitment volunteer service in Massachusetts.
The honor will be presented during the opening ceremonies of the "Relay for Life of Berkshire County All College" at MCLA. This will be the first time for MCLA to host the event, with combined efforts from Williams College and Berkshire Community College. Students will camp out overnight in the quad and attend the many ceremonies and events throughout the night.
MCLA is a long-time sponsor of the Northern Berkshire Relay for Life. The College provides meeting space for team captains, hosts team meetings and offers printing capabilities for luminary labels. The luminaries which line the track of the path walked at the event are purchased in honor of cancer survivors and are in memory of those who lost their battle to cancer.
MCLA also hosts the "Coaches vs. Cancer" tournament in the Campus Center gymnasium. Every high school in the county participates. Funds are raised for the cause during this two-day event.
Community Executive of Development for the American Cancer Society Laura Baron said, "I can't thank MCLA enough for all of their work. When MCLA students Katie Collins and Todd Foy approached us and petitioned for a 'Colleges Against Cancer Chapter' at MCLA I was thrilled with their passion and enthusiasm. These students have worked very hard."
One of many events, the "Survivor Lap" is where cancer survivors walk the first lap of the designated path and then participate in a reception afterward. A member of each team will walk the path throughout the night starting at 6 p.m. on Friday and ending at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Bands will perform, including MCLA's a cappella group, the Allegrettos, at opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. and at the luminary ceremony at 9 p.m.
