Anita F. Hill Keynote Speaker at 2010 MCLA Commencement
Commencement was held on Saturday, May 22. The following degrees were awarded: 323 bachelor's degrees, 38 Master's of Education degrees and 2 advanced graduate study certificates. The day was a true celebration for our graduates, faculty, and staff. In addition, President Mary K. Grant awarded four honorary degrees to distinguished guests at the ceremony. Anita F. Hill, attorney and Brandeis University professor of law, public policy, and women's studies, received an honorary Doctor of Laws, and provided the Commencement keynote address. Also receiving honorary degrees were business executive and former MCLA Trustee Foster Devereux who received an honorary Doctor of Public Service; Academy Award-winning painter Stephen Hannock who received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts; and MCLA alumni, educator, and community volunteer Josetta Owen '65 who received an honorary Doctor of Humanities.

Retiree Reception
On Thursday, May 13 we honored a number of faculty and staff who retired this past year at a dessert reception. Members of the campus community had the opportunity to share their appreciation, best wishes, and thanks to these colleagues and friends: Joanne Alcaro (advancement), Bill Arzt (computer services), Bonnie Bishoff (fine and performing arts), Michael Champney (facilities), David Hyde (facilties), Janice Messer (advancement), Walter Mille (facilities), Bill Minardi (education), Judy Ozolins (student affairs), Leon Peters (graphics), and Maynard Seider (sociology).
MCLA on the Move
- Political Science and Public Policy professor Petra Hejnova, presented the paper "Women and the State: How State Policies Shape Women's Movements in Transitional Countries" at the Annual Meeting of the Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA) held in Chicago, IL, April 21 - 23. She also served as a chair and a discussant for the "Organizations, Tactics and Women" panel.
- Political science majors Jason Phelps '11, Chris Skutnik '12 and Nicholas Altonaga '11 have all spent the spring semester interning with local government. Jason and Chris worked for the City of North Adams, Nick with the Town of Adams.
- History professors Anthony Daly and Ely Janis, attended the national meeting of the American Conference for Irish Studies (ACIS), held at the Penn State Happy Valley campus May 5 - 8. Professor Daly presented "Before Home Rule: Reformers, Radicals, and Nationalists in England and Ireland" Professor Janis presented "Why Have We No Leaders Like Parnell? African-American Leaders and the Irish," and moderated the panel "Slavery in the Irish Atlantic."
- Tiesha Twomey '10 was accepted as one of twelve students statewide to participate in the Salem Poetry Seminar May 31 - June 5. The seminar offers students at the Commonwealth's public institutions of higher education the opportunity to study poetry.
