2005 MCLA BASEBALL SEASON OUTLOOK
After a disappointing campaign in 2004, the MCLA Baseball team will look to rebound in 2005. Many new faces are on board in what will be an exciting, but challenging year for the MCLA nine. Fourteen players return while the addition of 11 newcomers round out this season’s roster. Here is a position breakdown for the 2005 squad:
Coaching Staff:
Head Coach Jeff Puleri returns for his third season at the helm. Puleri previously guided the pitching staff before taking over as head coach. Last season the staff regained top form as they finished second in the conference in ERA. Joining the staff this season is Tom Rizzo. After volunteering in 2004, Coach Rizzo will be counted on to be the hitting instructor. Rizzo played three seasons in the minors before entering the coaching ranks. Rounding out the staff will be recent MCLA graduates Ben Tyer and Chris Bailey. Both will be counted on to work with the hitters and infielders.
Catcher:
Returning to his starting role at catcher will be Joe Belmosto (Marshfield, MA). In 2004, Belmosto showed tremendous leadership in his freshman season. He was a major factor in the pitching staff development and will be counted on to do the same this year. At the plate, Belmosto turned it on the second half of the season hitting in his last nine games. Battling Belmosto for playing time behind the plate will be two freshmen. Pat Barnes (Watervliet, NY) and Ryan Bridegroom (East Greenbush, NY) both bring depth to the catching position. They will also compete for time as the team’s DH.
First Base:
Matt Murphy (Jamaica Plain, MA) will take over as the everyday first basemen. Murphy was an All-Conference performer in 2004 as a DH. Murphy’s offensive production will go a long way in determining the team’s success in 2005. Backing Murphy at first will be sophomore Paul McManus (Stillwater, NY). McManus has the potential to be an everyday player with his bat. He is a line drive hitter who should see some time as the designated hitter.
Second Base:
This should be one of the most competitive spots on the team. As many as four players could see action at Second. Coming off a solid fall season, Freshman Mike Sucharzewski (Shelbourne Falls, MA) may have the inside track. He combines great athleticism with a great arm. Another freshman, Justin Giuliano (Olivebridge, NY), will also get some opportunities. He has great speed to go along with great range. Other potential options at second include senior John Maguire (Lakeville, MA) and another freshman Anthony Bruno (Queens, NY).
Shortstop:
Senior Matt Lasalle (Marston Mills, MA) returns after getting the majority of starts last year. He will be counted on to solidify the infield defense. Challenging Lasalle will be another senior, John Maguire. Maguire adds a little more pop to the lineup which could push him into a designated hitter role. With two veterans at short, it looks to be a strong season.
Third Base:
Moving in from the outfield to play third is Tom Hevey (Chicopee, MA). Hevey was a mainstay in the lineup last season and has a rare combination of speed and power. He should bat in the middle of the lineup in 2005. Backing Hevey up will be between a trio of freshmen. Ryan Bridegroom, Anthony Bruno, and Brad Marcell (Rutland, VT) all bring solid defensive skills to the position. Whoever emerges at the plate could see some action.
Outfield:
Offensively, the MCLA outfield should be very productive. Bob Howland (Rockaway, NJ) returns after an All-Conference performance in the outfield. He should bat in the middle of the lineup. Joining Howland will be Junior Ricky Roberts (Leverett, MA). Roberts adds power to the lineup. He should bat in the cleanup role for MCLA. Other possible starters include the speedy Chris Flynn (Pittsfield, MA). He could fill the void at the leadoff position. Battling for time in the outfield will be Freshman Rob Healy (Corinth, NY), Junior Nick Randall (North Adams, MA), and another freshman Dan Walter (Pittsfield, MA).
Pitching Staff:
The 2004 staff finished second in the conference. In 2005, they return all but one starter in hopes of staying at the top. Leading the rotation are two upperclassmen, Junior Gary Hicks (Buckland, MA) and Senior Steve Hemingway (Mattapoisett, MA). Both will be counted on to log innings and shut down top opponents. Battling for the other spots within the rotation are Rich Dumas (Winthrop, MA), Seamus Morrison (Pittsfield, MA), and Anthony Bruno. All have the ability to shut down the opposition. Coming out of the bullpen will be a host of strong arms. Ricky Roberts will be one of the team’s hardest throwers. Others that will see time are Rob Healy, Matt Murphy, Ryan Bridegroom, and Dan Walter. Added depth should make the staff very durable.
