"MCLA not only gave me a great education in the classroom, it also gave me a chance to learn outside of the classroom. Whether it was on the baseball field, in the community, or working with different clubs and organizations MCLA gave me the chance to grow as a person. I use both my classroom and non-classroom education every day that I’m at work. I have to learn in every situation that presents itself, day after day. The meetings I attend are just like the small classroom settings at MCLA and allow me to feel comfortable. I prepare for those meetings just like I did for a test or a baseball practice. MCLA made me a better person. I feel more confident as a person with my MCLA degree."

 HEAD COACH

In August 2007, Jamie Morrison, previously the head men’s basketball coach at Haskell University in Lawrence, Kan., took over as the head men’s basketball coach and the assistant sports information director at MCLA. Haskell is the only 100% Native American university in the country that competes athletically at the four-year collegiate level.

Morrison, who grew up in Massachusetts is a graduate of Winchester High School. He holds a Masters in Education degree in sports management from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa., as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and a Native American Studies Certificate from the UMass-Amherst.

Scott Nichols, director of MCLA’s athletics department said “Jamie’s personality is a great fit for the Athletics Department and MCLA, and has no doubt brought the men’s basketball program to another level.”

Morrison took over a team that never finished higher than last in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (the MCAC had two participants play in the NAIA Championship game in two of the last 4 years) and led them to a respectable 4th place finish in 2006-07. In his four years, Morrison coached two All-American Honorable Mentions, the 2006-07 MCAC Rookie of the Year, three First Team All-Conference players and four All-Conference Honorable Mention players. Morrison also has had two players go on from Haskell to play professionally in this country, and a third to play professionally in Europe.
