Berkshire Readiness Center to Offer PARCC Info Session

NORTH ADAMS, MASS. - Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) announces that the Berkshire Readiness Center will present "PARCC 101: Updates on PARCC Resources to Implement the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks" on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 3 p.m. in Berkshire Community College's (BCC) Koussevitzky Arts Center.

Teams of educators from public school districts and higher education faculty are invited to attend this event. They will learn more about the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) from the Berkshires' PARCC Educator Fellows: Robin Getzen, English language arts teacher at Lenox Memorial High School; and Charlie Kaminski, dean of academic affairs for business, science, mathematics and technology at BCC.

Getzen and Kaminski will discuss the 2012 edition of the PARCC Model Content Frameworks for ELA/Literacy and Mathematics, the standards in the curriculum frameworks for English language arts/literacy and mathematics, and assessment prototypes and other tools that educators can use to create and evaluate curriculum.

Sue Lane, Ed.D., the senior director for P-16 alignment and engagement at the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education heads the PARCC effort for Massachusetts, and will attend this event.

According to Lane, these campus engagement teams are the vehicles that are convening ongoing P-16 conversation and collaboration this fall. Activities focus on feedback to the draft readiness definition and workshops on and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and PARCC.

"The workshops focus on building a foundational knowledge of CCSS and PARCC, the inter-relationship of these, and most importantly the context for public higher education in Massachusetts," Lane said.

"This partnership of Campus Engagement Teams, Regional Readiness Centers, Massachusetts PARCC Fellows, within regions and among campuses and districts, has been a tremendous resource in support of collaboration, engagement, and the dialogue and sharing among faculty and among faculty and classroom teachers that is needed at the local and regional levels to understand and address issues of P-16 alignment and greater student success.  This decentralized structure is responsive to severe time constraints of P-16 educators and is a framework to sustain P-16 engagement overtime," she added.

For the last several months, PARCC and the Massachusetts departments of elementary and secondary and high education have supported 24 preschool-16 educators as Massachusetts PARCC Educator Leader Fellows. 

Massachusetts is one of 24 states that participates in PARCC, a consortium of states working together to develop a common set of K-12 assessments in English and math anchored in what it takes to be ready for college and careers.

These new K-12 assessments will build a pathway to college and career readiness by the end of high school, mark students' progress toward this goal from third grade up, and provide teachers with timely information to inform instruction and provide student support. The PARCC assessments will be ready for states to administer during the 2014-15 school year.
