Distinguised Poets to Read at MCLA Gallery 51

03/14/2014

NORTH ADAMS, MASS. - Tupelo Press, in cooperation with Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts' (MCLA) Gallery 51 will host "Woman Talk: Voices We Write," as part of the Berkshire Festival of Women Writers on Saturday, March 22, at 2 p.m. in MCLA Gallery 51.

According to Janette Santos of the Berkshire Cultural Resource Center (BCRC), this event - which is free and open to the public - will include a lively reading and discussion by published poets Amy Dryansky, Annie Boutelle and Ellen Doré Watson.

Refreshments will follow the reading and discussion, and the writers' books will be for sale.

Dryansky, Boutelle and Watson will read from their work and talk about how they invent speakers who may - or may not - share characteristics with their authors. Each of them has experimented with writing a range of speakers, creating poems, and entire poetry collections, written in the voice of historical figures, contemporary characters drawn from the headlines, and personae that are less easy to pin down, but somehow feel familiar.

Each poet will read from her own work and pose the question, "How do we know who is really doing the talking?"  Is it the poet herself, or an assumed persona?  Varieties of personae will be explored through the readings and in conversation with the audience.

According to Carolyn Fabricant, North County coordinator for the Berkshire Film Festival, "Sometimes the voices we write have a distinct persona, and sometimes it seems as if the poet herself is speaking. Between these two poles is a continuum in which the poet's experience, identity, intention and imagination are at play. How do we know who's really doing the talking?"

MCLA Gallery 51, at 51 Main St. in North Adams, will bise open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
