Fourth Annual 'Berkshire County Goes to College' Event to Take Place on Area Campuses April 12, 13 & 15

03/24/2011

NORTH ADAMS, MA - The Berkshire Compact for Education and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) announce the Fourth Annual Berkshire County Goes to College Day, which will bring nearly 1,250 students to college campuses across the Berkshires April 12, 13 and 15.

The "Berkshire County Goes to College" initiative provides the opportunity for every sixth-grade student in the County to visit a local college campus in early April. It is part of an effort to raise awareness of college in Berkshire County residents at an early age.

"The opportunity to participate in 'Berkshire County Goes to College' is a milestone event for our youth in the path toward higher education," according to Denise Richardello, vice president of enrollment and external relations at MCLA. "By participating in these college visits, the sixth graders have the opportunity to experience a day on a college campus which encourages them to envision themselves in college as an important step in their future."

April 12, 13 and 15, the County's sixth-grade students will visit one of four Berkshire County college campuses - MCLA, Williams College, Berkshire Community College (BCC) or Bard College at Simon's Rock for "Berkshire County Goes to College Day." The visit is part of the Berkshire Higher Education Passport - a plan to help improve access to a college education. The Passport was developed to expose Berkshire County students to the concept of college and assist in raising the aspirations of all students to attain 16 years of education or training.

On April 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., students from Richmond Consolidated School, Lenox Memorial Middle/High School, Lee Elementary School, CT Plunkett Middle School in Adams, Greylock Elementary School in North Adams, Berkshire Arts and Technology School (BaRT) in Adams, and Sullivan Elementary School in North Adams will visit Williams College.

On April 13, 9:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., students from Reid Middle School in Pittsfield will visit MCLA. Students from Brayton Elementary School in North Adams, Cheshire Elementary School and Lanesboro Elementary School will visit Berkshire Community College (BCC) from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Students from Herberg Middle School in Pittsfield and Undermountain Elementary School in Sheffield will visit Simon's Rock from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

On April 15, from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m., students from Hancock Elementary School, Nessacus Regional Middle School in Dalton and Clarksburg Elementary School will visit MCLA. In addition, students from Abbott Memorial School in Florida, Williamstown Elementary School and Monument Valley Regional Middle School in Great Barrington will visit BCC from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The Berkshire Compact for Education was developed to address the higher education needs of Berkshire County residents and employers. The Compact is comprised of members from key area employment sectors, including cultural institutions, finance, healthcare and specialty manufacturing, along with school superintendents, college administrators and faculty, municipal officials and representatives of nonprofit organizations.
