Freshman finds MCLA is the 'right place'

01/01/2014

Brayleigh Hanlon '17 of Wynantskill, N.Y., was in kindergarten when she started playing basketball, so picking the right team to play with as a college student was as important as the school she chose for her studies. Once she met the Trailblazers, she found exactly what she was looking for - not only for women's basketball, but for the academics on campus.

"Being a part of this team was the main factor why I chose to attend MCLA," Hanlon said. "The women's basketball team and coaches had a huge impact on my decision. They all made me feel like I belonged here." Also, "I never imagined going to a huge college, so the size of the school was just what I was looking for. ... I definitely made the right decision."

The freshman guard earned her second MASCAC Rookie of the Week award last semester. She attributes her success on the courts to her teammates.

"I had such a great first semester here at MCLA and being a part of the women's basketball team," she said. "It has been a wonderful experience for me. It is nice being part of a team that is like a family to you."

She explained, "We have such a good chemistry, and that makes me want to play with all I have every time I get on the court. I play for my team and our success, so whatever little bit I can contribute, I am going to try my hardest."

"Being a student-athlete has contributed a lot to my growth here at MCLA," Hanlon continued. "It has introduced me to so many great new people that I am so glad to have met, and has brought new experiences and learning opportunities upon me."

This includes the volunteer service she's contributed to the community as a member of the women's basketball team. Hanlon also plans to participate in intramural sports this spring.

Having spent most of her life playing basketball, it stands to reason that she plans a career that's related to sports. With dream jobs such as working for Nike or a professional sports team in mind, Hanlon is majoring in sports management and marketing.

How has her academic experience been thus far? According to Hanlon, it's been "great."

"I can connect with each and every one of my professors, and that helps a lot when it comes to understanding the class and doing well," she said.

To Hanlon, the best part of being an MCLA student is the close community on campus and the low teacher-to-student ratio the College offers, which allows the professors to get to know everyone in their classes.

"I would most definitely recommend MCLA to others," she said. "It's a great community, very welcoming and friendly, and the teachers here at MCLA are very understanding and will go out of their way to make sure you are doing what needs to be done. No matter who you are, you will find your place that you will fit right into."
