MCLA Announces STEM Scholarships

03/21/2011

NORTH ADAMS, MA - As the lead partner of the Berkshire Compact for Education, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) has been awarded a $5,000 grant from AT&T. The funding will support MCLA students who major in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields.

"This assistance will help to remove the potential barrier of cost by helping students to finance their education," said Denise Richardello, vice president of enrollment and external relations at MCLA.

This MCLA scholarship program will complement the other strategies in place through the Berkshire STEM Pipeline Network.  As the lead partner of the Berkshire STEM Pipeline Network, MCLA provides preK-16 teachers and students with training and an expanded curriculum to motivate and inspire more area residents to enter the STEM fields.

"We are pleased to receive this award, to support students who are interested in the STEM fields.  Preparing the future STEM workforce is important at the national level as well as on a regional level," said Monica Joslin, dean of academic affairs at MCLA.

MCLA also sponsors two annual regional science and engineering fairs, one for middle school students and one for high school students. Students who place at the regional fair have the opportunity to go on to the State Fair.

Scholarship recipients will be selected based on financial need, their plans to pursue a STEM-related education and on their academic promise. Prospective students who have participated in Berkshire County STEM activities will receive additional consideration, due to their early demonstration of interest in STEM fields.

Students interested in being considered for this scholarship should contact the Office of Admission at (413) 662 5410.
