The next exhibition in MCLA Gallery 51, “Here’s Looking at You,” portraits of people in the Berkshires both past and present, will open on Thursday, Nov. 30, at a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Main Street gallery.
The event is free and open to the public. Those in attendance may have their own portraits drawn as local artist John Shamburger will be in the gallery, creating caricatures for $5 each.
“Here’s Looking at You” will feature portraits in a multitude of mediums, including video, sculpture, painting, and photography by dozens of artists. They include cartoonist Howard Cruse; painters Ed Cating, Danny O, Viola Moriaty and Reza Pike, sculptors Badri Gaguadze and Diane Sullivan; videographers Alan Chartock, Martha Bowers and David Lachman; and photographers Carolyn Beaudreau, Gillian Jones, Joe Manning and Kevin Sprague. In addition, John McDonald and Mark Mulherrin will display their drawings.
Also, the exhibit will include a selection of historic photographs by Randy Trabold, who took more than 5,000 photos spanning some 44 years while working for the North Adams Transcript.
“The gallery’s goal is to act as a connection between the local community, the arts community, and the college community, and this show is a perfect example of doing just that,” said Jonathan Secor, director of special programs at MCLA.
Almost all of the works will be for sale. The show will be up through the holidays, closing on Jan. 21, 2007. “Here’s Looking at You” was curated by Secor; Hezzie Phillips, director of the Contemporary Artists Center in North Adams; and Sean Riley, local artist and MCLA Gallery 51 manager.
