NORTH ADAMS, MA – Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts has announced the appointment of President Mary K. Grant by former Gov. Mitt Romney to two state boards that support science and technology advancements in the Commonwealth. The boards are the Commonwealth Information Technology Initiative Fund Advisory Board and the Robert H. Goddard Council on science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.
The Commonwealth Information Technology Initiative (CITI) is a measure supporting the Information Technology program at the state and community colleges as well as UMass-Amherst. The Advisory Board consists of 12 members, eight of whom are appointed by the governor. The purpose of the CITI Fund is to provide funding for a collaborative approach to information technology education through a series of open competitions for grants to K-12 educational institutions in the areas of educator development, curriculum enhancement, IT across the curriculum and regional cooperation.
The Robert H. Goddard Council was established within the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education in honor of Robert H. Goddard, a noted physicist and father of modern rocketry. The Council has the administration of the $4 million STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Pipeline Fund and is a voice for STEM education and policy as it works on STEM-related efforts to increase the pipeline of students entering STEM careers in Massachusetts.
“With Mary on both of these boards, we can be assured of thoughtful and dynamic representation for MCLA and Berkshire County,” said state Rep. Daniel E. Bosley, D-North Adams, co-chair of the Goddard Council and a member of the CITI board. “She’s been very active in finding ways that MCLA can structure its higher education programs toward careers in the sciences and technologies. She’s done an outstanding job for MCLA as a whole and for setting goals to align its student programs along the paths of the future economy.”
Grant said she was eager to get started with the work of the boards as its members think about how to advance the Commonwealth in science and technology-related arenas.
“Our young people have to be competitive, no matter what their geography or economic bracket might be.” Grant is delighted that the western part of the state will be represented at both boards. “But I am even more pleased that we have another opportunity to get the word out about the tremendous work and innovation happening at MCLA!”
As part of Berkshire County’s STEM initiative, MCLA will host the Region I, Western Massachusetts, High School Science Fair on Friday, March 9. On May 5, the Region I Middle School Science Fair will be held on the MCLA campus. More than 125 high school students are expected to attend this Friday’s Fair, and 70 projects will be on display.
MCLA’s work in science, math and technology in partnership with the business community was recognized by the Associated Industries of Massachusetts (AIM) with its 2006 Legacy of Leadership Award for the Berkshire Region.
