"I received a great education from MCLA that laid the groundwork for me to succeed at law school. I use the skills I learned at MCLA, especially in the area of research and writing, on a daily basis and still speak with many of my former professors. It is not every school where you can create such a lasting bond with the professors and community. The strong community bond found at MCLA was a factor in my husband (Scott Lord ’98) and my decision to attend MCLA and our desire to remain involved with MCLA after graduation."

NORTH ADAMS, MA – On Sunday, April 6, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) honored more than 60 individuals at the Taconic Society Donor Recognition Luncheon, held at The Orchards in Williamstown. The luncheon honored Taconic Society members, members of the MCLA Legacy Society, and sponsors of endowed funds at the College.

During the event, David L. Jowett ’93 awarded the 2008-09 James A. Hardman Jr. Scholarship in journalism and communications. The Hardman scholarship, the only full tuition, board and fee scholarship offered by the College, was established by the family of James A. Hardman Jr., former editor and publisher of The North Adams Transcript.
Jowett presented the scholarship to Jennifer Chinn, a member of the MCLA class of 2009.

Chinn, a resident of North Andover, has aspired to be a journalist since the fourth grade. As a second-semester freshman writing for The Beacon, MCLA’s student newspaper, she held the position of staff writer. As a first-semester sophomore, she was the senior news editor. This semester, she is the co-managing editor, and, next fall, she will hold the position of editor-in-chief. Upon her graduation in May 2009, Chinn hopes to work for her hometown newspaper, the Eagle Tribune, and she aspires to one day write for the New York Times.

Recipients of the Hardman scholarship must have an interest in pursuing a career in journalism, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours, have worked on The Beacon staff or have participated with a daily newspaper or other external publication as an intern, and provide a significant portfolio of work in journalism/communications for review.

Members of the Taconic Society contribute $1,000 or more each year to support MCLA. The Legacy Society recognizes and honors those who have invested in the future of the College through planned or deferred giving.

Endowed funds consist of a contribution of $10,000 or more, which establishes a donor-named fund for scholarship or program support in perpetuity.
