MCLA Green Living Seminar Series Begins Jan. 30


NORTH ADAMS, MASS. - "Cultivating a Sustainable Food System" will be the theme of Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts' (MCLA) spring semester Green Living Seminar Series, which will begin with a seminar on "Creating Sustainable Food Systems" on Thursday, Jan. 30, at 5:30 p.m. in Murdock Hall room 218 on the MCLA campus.

"Creating Sustainable Food Systems" will be presented by Philip Ackerman-Leist, associate professor of environmental studies and director of the Farm and Food Project at Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vt.  Ackerman-Leist also is the author of "Rebuilding the Foodshed: How to Create Local, Sustainable, and Secure Food Systems."                                                                                                          

This event is free and open to the public.

"Creating Sustainable Food Systems" is the first offering in an 11-week series that will consider broad implications of our how food is produced, transported and consumed.

"These presentations will inform both students and community members about strategies for realizing a more secure and sustainable food system in our region," said Dr. Elena Traister, MCLA professor of environmental science.

The seminars will take place Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. from Jan. 30 to April 24. Future Green Living presentations will include:

Feb. 6: "Policies for the Future of New England's Food System," presented by Margaret Sova McCabe, professor of law at the University of New Hamphire

Feb. 13: "The Role of Food Co-ops," presented by David Durfee, general manager of Wild-Oats Co-op                                                                                          

Feb. 20: "The Environmental History of Milk," Kendra Smith-Howard, assistant professor at the University of Albany and author of "Pure and Modern Milk: An Environmental History Since 1900"

Feb. 27: Panel discussion on "Sustainable Food Systems on College Campuses," including MCLA Aramark Food Services Director John Kozik, Williams College Sustainable Food and Agriculture Program Manager Brent Wasser, Hampshire College Sustainability Initiative Director Beth Hooker, and UMass Auxiliary Enterprises Sustainability Manager Rachel Dutton

March 6: "Sustainable Business as a Vehicle for Social Change," presented by Dean Cycon, founder and CEO of Dean's Beans Organic Coffee Company                                                                         

March 20: "Current Status of Farming in Berkshire County," presented by Melissa Adams, program coordinator of Keep Berkshires Farming, and Sarah Gardner, associate director of the Williams College Center for Environmental Studies 

March 27: "Meat Production and Processing," presented by Ali Berlow, author of "The Mobile Poultry Slaughterhouse: Building a Humane Chicken Processing Unit to Strengthen Your Local Food System"

April 3: "Permaculture and Resilient Food Systems," presented by Jono Neiger, professor of Regenerative Design at The Conway School, and principal at Regenerative Design Group                                                                                                                       

April 10: "Community Gardens: Sharing the Harvest," presented by Jennifer Munoz, director of the Growing Healthy Garden Program, and Russell Moody, pastor at Pittsfield Church of Christ                                                                                                                  

April 24: Farmers' Roundtable Discussion: "Successes, Opportunities, and Challenges Farming in the Berkshires"

Every semester, MCLA's Green Living Seminar Series hosts lectures by local, regional and national experts organized around a central theme related to the environment and sustainability. The 2014 series is a presentation of MCLA's Berkshire Environmental Resource Center and the MCLA Environmental Studies Department.
