MCLA to Host Biennial '100 Hours in the Woodshed'

NORTH ADAMS, MA - After an inaugural exhibition in January 2007, and a sequel in January 2009, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) once again will bring together dozens of artists from Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, California and Wisconsin for a five-day marathon of collage-making as MCLA Gallery 51 and the MCLA Gallery 51 Annex are transformed into temporary artist workshops for assemblage and experimentation.

Masterminded by collage artists Daniel O'Connor and Scot Zeiher, the third biennial "100 Hours in the Woodshed" will begin on Thursday, Jan. 27, with a "Meet the Artists" reception, from 5 to 7 p.m. at MCLA Gallery 51.

During the five days that follow, the galleries will be full of activity as collages of every sort are created: from paper and glue, to film and sound, if it can be cut apart, appropriated, moved around and pieced together into a new form, it's bound to be happening in the "woodshed," according to MCLA Gallery 51 Manager Ven Voisey, who also will be a participating artist in the event.

The gallery-as-makeshift-studio will remain open to the public on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 28-30, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to stop by and watch the work in progress.

"Something wonderful happens when you get a bunch of people together to create work. There's an atmosphere of momentum and resonance in which everyone serves as input for everyone else whether they're aware of it or not," said Voisey. "In such a compressed space and time you just have to put aside an all-too-often overbearing inner-censor and run with whatever's whirling in your skull and at your fingertips, and if you're lucky, something beautiful is revealed."

The exhibition then will be curated and installed over a single day, with an opening reception to be held on Tuesday, Feb. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m., at MCLA Gallery 51. The event is free and open to the public.

"This exhibition celebrates the communal efforts of a disparate group of artists, some expectantly creating the first artworks ever exposed and others with long lists of gallery and museum exhibitions, the concept and content uniquely designed to delight the viewer by the remarkable output of this eclectic and engaging group of artists," O'Connor said.

Participating artists include Samuel Adams, Jason Brinkerhoff, Pamela Buchanan, Lana Z Caplan, Andrew Davis, Claire Eder, Joshua Field, Claire Fox, Mark Holstein, Maggie Hunt, Max Jeffers, Josh Jefferson, Joseph Kennard, Henry Klein, Melora Kuhn, Melissa Lillie, Lisa Lindgren, Steve Morell, Melanie Mowinski, Mark Mulherrin, Shane Murray, Lisa Nilsson, Danny O, Sean O'Brien, Kristen Parker, Rich Remsberg, Jeff Smith, Ven Voisey, Adam Winner and Scott Zieher.

"100 Hours in the Woodshed III" will be open through Feb. 20.
