At MCLA Gallery 51: Erin Ko: 'We are the Music Makers'

NORTH ADAMS, MA - Opening on Thursday, July 28, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) Gallery 51 will present "We Are the Music Makers," a solo show by Erin Ko. The exhibition is part of DownStreet Art, an initiative of MCLA's Berkshire Cultural Resource Center.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, July 28, 6-9 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Through a variety of tech-infused mediums, Ko combines various traditions and mythologies with science fiction as a means of looking at contemporary culture's state of being caught somewhere between the two.

"Future and ancient, natural and artificial, seductive and scary; our strange and modern lives are driven by juxtaposition and synthesis," according to Ko. "To live in the 'now' is to live in a strange and surreal state of being. Reality has subsumed fantasy, life imitates art and vice-versa with a whole new level of intensity; a roller coaster feedback loop. There is no such thing as science fiction; all our stories, dreams, beliefs are simultaneously true and entirely delusional."

Ko, who has spent recent years traveling abroad, now resides in North Adams, Mass. Her interests lie in combining traditional art-making methods with new ones to achieve unique process and result. For this recent body of work, Ko augmented reality in conjunction with real-world collage and sculpture. The work a suite of images that utilize qr codes, commonly found on a wide variety of advertising. These codes allow smart phone users to acquire more information from various printed media.

Art enthusiasts are invited to bring their friends and/or smart devices for better enjoyment of the show.

"We Are the Music Makers" opens in conjunction with DownStreet Art Thursday, a citywide celebration of the arts that happens throughout the summer every last Thursday of the month. This event will include gallery exhibition openings, street musicians and specials at local businesses.

The event is free and open to the public.
