MCLA Announces 20th Annual Community Day of Service

NORTH ADAMS, MA - Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), Develop North Adams and the City of North Adams announce the 20th Annual Community Day of Service will   take place on Saturday, May 5, starting with registration and a continental breakfast to begin at  9:30 a.m. in the lower level of the MCLA Church Street Center.

Participants then will depart into the community as part of work teams to tackle various clean-up assignments and improvement projects.

MCLA and the local community first came together 20 years ago an annual effort to clean up and improve the city. According to Spencer Moser, coordinator of MCLA's Center for Service and Citizenship, the scope and types of projects have evolved over the years, as has the increase in the number of people who come out to help make North Adams a better place to live.

MCLA volunteers, to include members of its student body, faculty and staff, will be joined by a number of community volunteers. Organizations and individuals expected to participate include: Allied Waste, Art About Town, Berkshire Chamber of Commerce BYP, Boy Scout Troop 88, City of North Adams' Department of Public Works, Develop North Adams Board members, Greylock School Art Program, Houghton Street Community Garden, North Adams Public Schools, Northern Berkshire Community Coalition, Jim Wolfe and his West End Clean-up crew, as well as Mayor Richard Alcombright, State Rep. Gail Carridi D-North Adams and former State Rep. Dan Bosley '76.

Volunteers will return to MCLA's Church Street Center at about 2 p.m. for pizza and other refreshments, provided by MCLA, ARAMARK, Develop North Adams and local restaurants.

Although many of the teams will use their own transportation, some of the volunteers will be transported to sites in vehicles provided by Dufor Bus, MCLA, North Adams Public Schools, BerkshireRides and the City of North Adams.

Trucks and supplies will be provided by Killian Flynn and Allied Waste, Paul Markland and the North Adams DPW and McAndrews-King Buick GMC.
