Athletics Banquet

This year's honorees at MCLA's annual Athletics Banquet got a special treat when they were joined by a special guest - award-winning Boston Globe sports columnist Bob Ryan. The sports writer also met with students and coaches during his visit to MCLA as he spoke to them about his career in sports media.

Each May, MCLA celebrates all of the Trailblazers and their accomplishments - both on and off of the field. Our student-athletes have had a great year, and last Tuesday's banquet was a wonderful opportunity to look back on the highlights of their seasons, and to acknowledge, thank and share best wishes with the senior student-athletes who will graduate this Saturday at our Commencement ceremony.

This year's banquet also was distinguished when Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) Professor Tim Jay inaugurated FAR Academic Awards to recognize academic achievement as an important part of the student-athlete experience.

The individual FAR award recipients for 2011-12 were Jessica Guay '12 and Joe Whitehouse '12, with the team Grade Point Average Award going to the men's and women's cross country teams.

Other highlights of the banquet included recognition of MCLA golfer Shane Ortega '12 and Jen Wehner '12, a member of the women's basketball and soccer teams, who took home the top individual honors as they were selected as the Louis Parisien and Sue Getchell award winners.

The Louis Parisien Memorial Award is given annually to the outstanding male student-athlete in memory of Parisien. A 1952 graduate of the College, Parisien demonstrated excellence in both academics and athletics. Also known as the "Sportswoman of the Year Award," the Sue Getchell Award is given each year to the upper-class, female student-athlete who demonstrated excellence in both academics and athletics.

Many different honors were bestowed throughout the night as student athletes were presented with accolades from the Student Athletic Advisory Committee, Team MVPs, Faculty Athletics Representative academic awards and the Steve Green Service award.

The banquet concluded with a senior reflection from MCLA women's soccer player Jackie Nash '12, who received a director's award during the evening.
