Jarvis Rockwell Gallery To Open New Exhibit

NORTH ADAMS, MASS. - The Transcript Gallery, located within the North Adams Transcript office, will present "Capturing Northern Berkshire," a series of photographs taken over the past three years by Transcript reporter and City resident Meghan Foley. The exhibition will open on Aug. 30 as part of the DownStreet Thursday celebration.

The public is invited to attend a free, opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, in the Transcript "pop up" gallery, which this season began to display the artistic efforts of its staff.

North Adams Transcript Publisher Peter Lynch said he is "incredibly excited" that the Transcript office is a multi-functional community space. Jonathan Secor, the director of MCLA's Berkshire Cultural Resource Center, is pleased that the many talents of Transcript reporters can be woven into the history and culture of North Adams.

Included in the series of photographs are scenes that capture the elegance of winter, the vibrancy of spring, the laziness of summer and the crispness of fall, using locations throughout the Northern Berkshire area. Awed by the beauty of the Berkshires, Foley said she aspires to create moments of reflection and content in her viewers as they gaze upon what may be their own backyards or places of leisure-or even spots familiar from their commute to work.

Foley began dabbling in photography as a child, but did not begin to take it seriously until after she moved to North Adams in July 2008. An Eastern Massachusetts native, she enjoys engaging with the outdoors and wanted to combine her interest in photography with her appreciation for nature.  She since has sought to get the most out of her Canon PowerShot camera while teaching herself how to use framing, angles and light.  Her goal is to duplicate as closely as possible her subject to transform its fleeting beauty into a lasting impression.

According to DownStreet Art Program Coordinator Francesca DeBiaso, Foley's work demonstrates "a keen eye to hidden details and beauties of often overlooked gems of the Northern Berkshires." Foley is looking forward to compiling and displaying her work and developing a more comprehensive portfolio. She hopes that this is just a single show of many more to come in her local community and greater Berkshire County.

"Capturing Northern Berkshire" runs from Aug. 30 to Sept. 22 in Gallery 107, at 85 Main St. in North Adams. The gallery is open Monday-Friday, 8-5 p.m. For more information, go to or search for Meghan Foley Photography on Facebook.
