Annual Student Art Show Opens

Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) Gallery 51 is presenting "We Are for ART: MCLA Student Art Show," a showcase of student artwork.

"This year marks the start of the new Art Major at MCLA. This show brings together work from newly declared art majors and students exploring their artistic voice," said Melanie Mowinski, MCLA art professor.

Coordinated by MCLA faculty, staff, and students, the exhibition features work from the Advanced Art Lab course which includes student designed independent projects and a collaborative artist book from the "Interior/Exterior Project." Students enrolled in this course are Carl Bowlby, Nick Corbello, Merritt Fletcher, Signe Kutzer, Kate Malloy, Kaileigh McKinley, Brielle Rizzotti and Natalie Tottenham.

The show includes works from new course offerings in graphic design. Nicole Bohle, Pam Buchanan, Melanie Coombs, Adam Duchemin, Alex Massar, Jenna McLain, Annee Reinhardt and Kira Smith invented symbolic and representational alphabets which will be exhibit as broadsides and in some sort of applied way including sound, book and installation.

The show also will include numerous works from students across campus, as they reveal their own ways that they are for ART. Their explorations include sculpture, drawing, painting, photography, collage and more.

On Wednesday, May 6, a musical composition, "Vexations," composed in 1893 by Erik Satie, will be performed by pianists from the MCLA community in the gallery, beginning at 7 a.m. A revolutionary work, its performance lasts for a total of 18 hours and 40 minutes.

"We Are for ART" runs through May 24. MCLA Gallery 51 is at 51 Main St. in North Adams and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  For more information, call 413-664-8718, or go to Gallery51 .
