Third Thursday to Focus On Science


 NORTH ADAMS, MASS. - Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), lead partner of the Berkshire STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Pipeline, will participate in the Third Thursday program by bringing the Pipeline's Starlab - Planetarium to Cultural Pittsfield's "Weird Science" event, to take place on Thursday, Aug. 15, 5-8 p.m. in downtown Pittsfield.

This event, sponsored by SABIC, supports the goals of the Berkshire STEM Pipeline, a~program that advocates the improvement of science, technology, engineering and math education for both students and teachers.

Monica Joslin, dean of academic affairs at MCLA, said the College is pleased to work with the City of Pittsfield in dedicating the Aug. 15 event to STEM. The event is being spearheaded by SABIC's Sandra Lanning, a member of the STEM steering committee.

"We are so grateful to SABIC for all their contributions and for sponsoring this event," Joslin said. "Our goal is to expand on this initiative. Next summer, we hope to expand this event as part of DownStreet Art in North Adams."

Area businesses will offer science-related booths at this event, which will be located through downtown Pittsfield. They will offer STEM-related demonstrations and hands-on experiments. The activities will be safe for children and take no longer than five minutes to complete.
