ALANA Student Services
Knowing that for all students academic achievement is the highest priority in college, and recognizing that ALANA (African, Latino, Asian and Native American) students may face additional challenges while enrolled at a predominately white college, the College offers a number of options for ALANA students to build a strong community to support individual and group achievement. Students are encouraged to meet individually with the ALANA Coordinator to affirm each student’s cultural values and traditions. Students also meet as a group frequently during the academic year. These meetings often times focus on student identified needs and interests as well as developing leadership skills and planning activities. The ALANA Services Office is located in the Campus Center Room 319 and houses the Multicultural Center Room 320. The Center is open during Campus Center hours and has student computers, student assistants, and resource information.
An important focus is to encourage mentoring relationships between successful upper class students and first year ALANA Students. The ALANA Office with the support of Student Affairs identifies ALANA Scholars to serve as mentors for first and second year ALANA students. Additionally, the ALANA Student Clubs are provided lists of new ALANA students so that they can outreach to them. Mentoring relationships are determined and influenced by major to help new students learn academic as well as social strategies for success. Another important focus is student leadership and engagement in building Campus Community. While ALANA students are encouraged to participate within our ALANA Clubs and organizations, we also encourage ALANA Students to assume leadership roles in student government and campus life such as becoming a Resident Assistant or Peer Advisor. Consequently, ALANA student participation and leadership in our Campus Community is often experienced in a prominent and vital way. The ALANA Office works in collaboration with our ALANA Clubs and other areas throughout the Campus to enhance programs, activities, and College services to ensure that ALANA students contributions are maximized and needs addressed. The following are examples of College programs that are enhanced by the efforts outlined above: - Multicultural Overnights for prospective ALANA students
- Admissions Open Houses for prospective students
- Accepted Student Open Houses
- Orientation sessions for new students
- ALANA Clubs and Organizations programs and activities
- Academic Advisement
- Access to scholarship information
- Community Service and outreach opportunities
- Career and Graduate School exploration
- Connections to the cultural resources shared by the MCLA and neighboring college communities
