Massachusetts Hall of Black Achievement These awards honors and celebrates the culmination of an undergraduate career that exemplifies academic achievement, strong leadership skills, and good citizenship both on campus and within the community. The spirit of the student achiever award recognizes these students as the future. The selection process is at the discretion of the individual participating State Colleges. However, the Hall of Black Achievement Commission provides each college with sample materials and suggested selection criterion to assist with the process only. It is recommended that students selected by the participating College to receive this award be evaluated using the following criterion: A member of the senior class and participant in Winter or Spring Commencement Demonstrated academic achievement Demonstrated participation and leadership in academic and/or co-curricular activities Service to the College and the community-at-large, and Potential for future achievement 2008 Winners
Erica V. Allen 2008 MCLA HOBA Biography:
Erica is a Boston native who transferred to MCLA from UMASS Boston. She continues to be on the Deans list, has earned the ALANA Academic Achiever and Center for Service Scholar awards, and has been inducted into the National Honor Societies for First Year Students, Juniors, and Seniors. She combined her Excellence in the classroom with leadership as the Vice President of the MCLA Dance Company, Peer Advisor, and a Co-Facilitator for our Campus Conversations on Race. She Also finds time to volunteer in community outreach and after school programs.
Juana (Maria) Arias 2008 HOBA Biography:
Maria commutes to MCLA from Lee, MA and transferred from BCC. In addition to attending school full time, Maria also works at a local service agency that provides women life skills. She has been on the Deans list since 2004, inducted into the National Honor Society, and received a number of ALANA Academic Achievement Awards. On campus she has conducted an independent study project to identify the impact of economic, racial, and social factor for minority students attending college and represented MCLA presentations at national and regional conferences. She has been participating in efforts to increase awareness of world hunger, support for homeless shelters in Berkshire County, and volunteers in local schools as a translator for non-English speaking parents.
