Welcome to the MCLA Telecommunication Department.

MCLA is committed to providing updated telecommunication services to the entire MCLA college community, as well as, the outside community. The telecommunications department is continuing to evolve in the areas of faster, more efficient and professional service. Our effort is to stay competitive in the area of providing technologies so we can continue to grow and expand with our institution, and offer an innovative source of communication for the future here at MCLA.

This webpage is designed to provide all persons quick and reliable access to information regarding retrieving voicemail on and off campus, directory assistance, troubleshooting telecom issues, and answers to most frequently asked questions.

Switchboard Location and Hours of Operation

The switchboard is located in the Public Safety office on the first floor of the Amsler Campus Center adjacent to the bookstore.

Hours of operation are from 8 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday for assistance with international calling, programming problems and all other troubleshooting or assistance via the college operator. There is 24/7 Emergency response dispatcher for assistance.

Switchboard Procedure and User Information

  • The college community is encouraged to utilize the college directory to connect to the appropriate extension via the main automated college menu, press 3 for college directory, faculty/staff campus directory booklets, and via our college website Phone lookup
  • International calling is restricted on most phones on campus. In order to connect internationally, please call the operator with the complete number you wish to call including 011, country code, city code and phone number.
  • The operator nor the dispatcher will connect calls to a student resident phone number. These number also are available, unless a student chooses to be unlisted, in the booklets, automated voicemail directory and on the college website.
  • For emergency assistance on campus, dial 5100 only, which is a college designated number to contact Public Safety office directly and is top priority in the order of being answered by the operator or dispatcher.

All Faculty/Administrative/Staff requests for service should be directed to the Telecom/Voicemail Help Desk X 5115. All issues or troubles are to be reported to the help desk are as follows:

  • troubleshooting phone problems
  • moving extensions to new locations
  • requesting new phones or phone accessories
  • requesting new phone line and phone extension
  • resetting/changing pass codes
  • setting up new voice mail boxes
  • setting up voice mail trees for departments
  • troubleshooting fax/modem problems

Dialing Instructions for the MCLA

Local calling:

Press 9 then dial 662*,663*,664*,743*,458*,or 597*, for local area which includes:

  • North Adams
  • Clarksburg
  • Adams
  • Cheshire
  • Williamstown
Also including in local dialing for the 66* area is 1-802-694* for Stamford, VT area only.

Long distance calling:

Administrative:
Press 9 then dial 1-413-44*, 43*, 49* for long distance calls outside local areas.

Students:
Press 8, 1, area code, 7-digit number, and then when prompted put in your PBN code for your long distance.

International calling and faxing:

Most departments and on campus phones do not allow international calling access. All calls requiring 011, need to go through the campus switchboard "0". Your calling number needs to consist of 011, country code, city code, and phone number.

International faxing can be obtained by using the fax machine located in the Administration/Finance department, bottom of Eldridge Hall which is available to the MCLA community.

Voicemail System Instructions Faculty/Staff

To set up or activate your voicemail:

From your personal extension:

  1. Dial 5101
  2. Type in 9 plus extension#
  3. follow tutorial directions.
  4. Set up greeting, name and security code (passcode), register option to be included in directory

From off-campus:

  1. Dial 413-662-5101
  2. Type in 9 plus extension (personal ID #)
  3. Type in security code (passcode)
  4. Follow tutorial directions.

Access voicemail from your personal extension:

  1. Dial 5101, type in security code
  2. Access voicemail if you share an extension (tree) or from another extension:

    1. Dial 5101
    2. Press #
    3. Type in 9 plus voicemail box #
    4. Type in security code.

    Two emergency phones are located on campus connecting the caller directly to Public Safety. To use these phones, press the red button and speak into box. The number will be displayed indicating location of caller.

    Single Line Phone Programming
    Forward calls on a Single line Phone:
    Pick up receiver and press:

    To Deactivate Call FWD on a Single Line:
    Press#1CxL Fwd Busy

    Set Memory for 7 One Touch keys:
    1. Leave phone on the hook.
    2. Remove card sheet from keys.
    3. Set memory switch to Write.
    4. Press desired key.
    5. Dial number (9) first
    6. Continue programming desired keys.
    7. When done, set memory switch to Protect
    To Clear Memory of Key Buttons:
    1. Leave phone on the hook.
    2. Remove card sheet
    3. Set memory switch to Write
    4. Press desired key
    5. With a pencil or pointed object, press Erase
    6. Reprogram key if desire, dial in number or extension, then press key again to set
    7. Set memory switch to Protect to save changes

    To Transfer a call on a single line phone:

    1. After conversing with party;
    2. Press Flash;
    3. Dial extension number
    4. Then hang up.

    D-Term 16-24 Phone Programming Instructions

    Function Key Activities on D-Term 16-24 Key Phone:
    FNC+1= Turn microphone on or off
    FNC+2= Adjusts handset receiver volume
    FNC+3= Selects ringer tone.
    FNC+4= Adjusts transmission/receiving volume.
    FNC+5= Activates hands-free operation. (Headsets only)
    FNC+6= Deactivates hands-free operation. (Headsets only)
    FNC+7= Turns call indicator lamp on and off for incoming call Notification. (if turned off, this lamp will still light to indicate message waiting.)

    Programming 16-24 Button Phones:

    1. Leave receiver on the hook
    2. Press FNC button
    3. Press desired keypad button.
    4. Enter the phone number. Display indicates digits dialed. Include 9 first.
    5. Press FNC again to save programmed number. Display will indicate SPD SET.

    This method is used to program all top keys on phone pad and on the side for a 24 button phone.

    Conference Call on D-Term phones (16-24 buttons):

    1. with the first caller on the line, ask party to hold.
    2. Press TRF, receive dial tone
    3. Dial desired number.
    4. When caller answers, press CNF....CNF LED lights.
    5. Three-way conference is established.
    6. If one party hangs up, the other two parties remain connected, but the CNF LED light goes out.

    TO TRANSFER A CALL ON A 15-24 BUTTON PHONE:

    1. After conversing with party;
    2. Press TRF
    3. Dial desired extension number
    4. Then hang up.

    PUT CALLS DIRECTLY INTO VOICEMAIL:

    1. While you have a call on the line and they want to be put directly into someone's voicemail box, press TRF
    2. Then dial 5101, *, Ext#, then hang up
    Frequently Asked Questions and Troubleshooting
    Telephone Questions:

    "My phone is broken, dead, or not work?" Unplug your phone cord from the wall jack for 30 seconds, then plug back into the jack.

    "Can I move my NEC phone from one jack to another"? NO. Our NEC system does not allow any phone to be plugged into the any jack. Each jack is programmed for a specific type of phone (digital/analog). Moving a phone will cause it not to function or cause damage within the PBX.

    "Can I dial 411 for directory still?" You can dial a number to access the national directory service at 555-1212, or go to switchboard link on left side.

    "I need a speaker phone for a conference call, where do i get one?" Telecommunication department has a wireless conference phone that operates on an analog port. Call X5284 to reserve the phone.

    "I need to have a conference call with more than 3 parties involved, do we have the capability?" Yes. We have conference calling through PaeTec which is generated by access codes. Contact X5284 for details.

    Voice Mail Questions

    "I'm not getting messages on my voice mail?" Probably your phone has to be reprogrammed to voice mail. Refer to the instructions for what type of phone (analog or digital).

    "I forgot my voicemail number to access my messages?" You can dial your own phone number to find out your voicemail number. The system will identify you within the voicemail greeting.

    Dial 5101 then Dial your extension number, then hit 1 to get right into voicemail. The system will identify you and your voicemail number.

    If you still have problems, contact the voicemail help desk X5115.

    "I forgot my passcode or having problems with my long distance?" You need to contact PaeTec Communications Customer Service @ 800-962-4772 or log on to campuslink.paetec.com.

    "I am a resident student and my phone is not taking messages?" Call the voicemail help desk, at X5115

    "Can I retrieve a deleted message from my voicemail?" No Always archive messages unless you are sure you want to delete, and once you disconnect from the system there is no retrieving deleted messages.
