Environmental Studies at MCLA

Environmental StudiesEnvironmental studies is a multidisciplinary major housed in the biology department which offers you a solid foundation in the natural and social sciences.  The theoretical lessons you learn in the classroom will be applied to a variety of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in order to enhance your study of human activities and their effects on natural systems.

Why take GIS?

Geographic information Systems/Science is rapidly becoming the optimum approach for displaying and analyzing both spatial and temporal data in virtually every field. Decision making then moves from a subjective "blackbox" situation to a reproducible, criteria drive process.  To successfully employ geospatial models in their chosen field, students must understand the theory, software applications, data and project management concepts, as well as the terminology related to GIS.

Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies Offers

Environmental StudiesOur major includes a variety of courses in discplines including biology, chemistry, geology, economics, and sociology.  Through our partnerships with local environmental organizations and agencies, you will have opportunities to investigate and develop solutions to environmental problems of regional significance.  Study abroad offers you the opportunity to experence the environment from a different geographical perspective.

The environmental studies program hosts a weekly "Green Living Seminar" series and was involved with the installation of solar panels on MCLA's Venable Hall which gave our students the opportunity to measure energy output.
