MCLA Presents! Word Becomes Flesh

Word Becomes Flesh
Co-presented with Williams College and MCLA's "Creating Equality" Series

Saturday, October 5th, 7:30pm
6pm pre-performance discussion: Trayvon, Race and being a Black Man in America

Word Becomes FleshA series of performed lettrs to an unborn son, Word Becomes Flesh, uses spoken word, dance, and live music to document nine months of pregnanacy from a young single father's perspective.

Performed by an exceptionally talented cast of poet-performers, Word Becomes Flesh fuses tender stories, playful wit, and at tmes, purposeful rage to give voice to complextities and contradictions surrounding race and gender in America.

With deep honesty and raw physicality, the play integrates hip-hop and contemporary dance to deconstruct black male identity in the 21st century. Word Becomes Flesh lyrically and choreographically shares one man's experience of fatherhood, and in doing so examies the legacy of patriarchy and male privilege and the continuum between fathers and sons. Together these narratives confront the interscetion between the reality and the mythology of the black male body - from the cotton field to the athletic field and all spaces in between.

Admission: $10 general admission, members & MCLA students free, MCLA alumni $8, MCLA staff & faculty $5
