Leadership Academy 

Our Mission Statement 

The Leadership Academy of Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts prepares participants for a successful future in educational administration and leadership. The Academy provides an integrated approach to leadership for men and women who are interested in advancing professionally and activating change in educational environments.

The success and growth of the Leadership Academy at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts is partially attributed to the intense residential and reflective nature of the program. An equally important aspect is the integration of the arts (including theater, visual arts, dance, music, literature, and poetry) with the theory and practice of leadership in education.

The curriculum of this highly creative program is based upon the following assumptions:

  • Integration of the arts with administrative theory and practice and immersion in aesthetic experiences enhances, informs, and evokes dynamic educational leadership.
  • Knowledge and understanding of educational administration -- fundamentals, supervision, staff development, curriculum evaluation, ethics and organizational analysis -- is essential for effective educational leadership.
  • Participation in a reflective and diverse community of learners enhances the internalization of group dynamics and sociopolitical collaboration.
  • Commitment to a process orientation to learning allows people to build bonds and networks.
  • Collaboration between faculty, students, and staff enhances creative strategies for problem solving, thus allowing the skills of participants to emerge holistically and authentically.
  • Shared decision making builds professional collaborative communities in our schools and society.
  • Leadership is understood and assimilated through multiple venues; therefore, a lifelong learning process of study, practice, and reflection becomes the continuing education of a dynamic and creative leader.
  • Leaders must work for justice, compassion, and ecological sustainability in schools and society so that all persons may be empowered, productive, creative, and compassionate participants in our democracy and agents of personal growth and social change.
  • Integration of cultural, economic, political, gendered, sexual, social, and aesthetic issues into the study of administrative theories and practices advances just leadership and dynamic school communities.
