MCLA Kicks Off Fall with Salsa Dura Band

NORTH ADAMS, MASS. - Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) will kick off the fall semester with a concert by Orquestra, SCC, a salsa dura band from New York City, N.Y. The public is invited to join the campus for this event on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m. in the campus academic quadrangle.

Orquestra Salsa con Conciencia "SCC," formerly known as La Exelencia, brings a modern vitality and social consciousness to the salsa genre, taking their bold sounds to salsa dancers and fans around the world, according to Jennifer Crowell, Berkshire Cultural Resource Center (BCRC) program coordinator.

"North Adams will really enjoy this performance from Orquestra. Their sound is unique, and each and every one of the musicians is an amazing performer." said Janette Santos, BCRC executive intern.

The band - composed of five former La Exelencia members - includes conguero and composer Jose VazquezCofresi, lead singer and composer Edwin Perez, arranger and bassist Jorge Bringas, percussionist Charles Dilone, trombonist Ronald Prokopez, as well as Yuniel Jimenez.

Orquestra, SCC has been featured by a number of media outlets, including Latin Music USA on PBS, a BBC-televised special live performance at the Barbican Centre in London, the New York Times, Latin Beat Magazine, the television show "So You Think You Can Dance."

Signed with Salsa Dura Entertainment LLC, the group is working on its fourth studio album, which will feature the "hardcore salsa sounds, danceable songs, and conscience lyrics" that co-composers VazquezCofresi and Perez have made the band known for, Crowell said.

Orquestra, SCC will perform at MCLA's academic quad on Saturday, Sept.14, at 2 p.m. Doors will open at 1 p.m. with a DJ set and food. Tickets are $10 for general admission. MCLA Presents! members and students get in for free.

The concert is a presentation of MCLA's Latin American Society, ALANA, and other campus clubs.
