NORTH ADAMS, MA - Dr. Laura Yang, dean of international education and entrepreneurial studies at the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade (SIFT) in China, will return to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) this summer to teach courses in business and economics.

A course on "Contemporary Economic and Business Issues in China" (ECON 348) will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 12 through Aug.18, from 6 to 9:15 p.m. in Pittsfield's Intermodal Center.

In this course, students will apply the methodologies of economics to the analysis of the global economy for business, evaluating how firms operate and managers make economic decisions.

ECON 348 will examine global economic governance, international cooperation, and its effects on industrial and developing economy. It also will deliver tools for analyzing markets in the global economy, including the study of competition, market structure, efficiency and industry equilibrium, as well as the tools and concepts for analyzing the performance of national economies.

Students also will look at the new emerging markets in China. The objective of the course is for students to develop frameworks for analyzing both economic opportunities and risks in operating in the global business environment.

In addition, this summer Yang will co-teach one of the required courses for MCLA's Professional MBA program, "Competing in Global Economies and Market" (PMBA 650).

Former students of Yang's have lauded her teaching. According to one student, "not only did I learn about China's economic structure, Professor Yang was able to tie information about China's culture and its people.... I found it all very interesting."

According to Gary Bellows, a student of Yang's last summer, "I recommend anyone to take this course. Professor Yang is an excellent instructor. I was fascinated with her lectures."

Yang (Yang Xiaoyan) is the Dean of International Education and Entrepreneurial Studies at Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade (SIFT). The Institute is affiliated with Shanghai World Trade Organization (WTO) Consultation Centre, where she serves as one of the business and economic consultants.

A regular visiting scholar at MCLA, Yang is an expert in entrepreneurial studies, international trade and finance, comparative business and economic theory, practices between China and the West, and WTO issues.
