Library Borrowing Policies

Becoming a Borrower:

Borrowing privileges are extended to all students, faculty and staff of the college. Residents of Berkshire Country should bring in their CWMARS library card issued by their local public library. MCLA does not issue library cards to area residents. A current college ID is required for students, faculty and staff who wish to borrow materials. Students from other Massachusetts public higher education institutions may borrow materials with a current college ID. Students from other institutions are advised to check with their own library regarding reciprocal borrowing procedures.

Loan Periods:

MCLA books are loaned out to students and residents for 28 days. Materials are loaned to faculty for the semester. MCLA materials may be renewed unless requested by another patron. Fines are 10 cents per day per item. Videos and DVDs from the Popular Viewing Collection are loaned overnight only and the fine is $1.00 per item per day. Only one video or  DVD can be borrowed at a time. Videos in the MCLA media collection can only be borrowed by faculty. Students may make arrangements to view them in the library or for classroom use. MCLA does not loan its videos or DVDs through interlibrary loan.  Reference books, textbooks, periodicals, microfilm, theses and materials in any of the special collections cannot be borrowed

CWMARS Libraries:

MCLA's Freel Library belongs to a consortium of libraries called Central/Western Massachusetts Resource Sharing and we all share an online catalog of our holdings. You may use your card to borrow books from other member libraries or through the catalog system itself. Materials you request through the catalog will be delivered to Freel Library and you will be notified of their arrival. To search all CWMARS member libraries simultaneously, go to this link:

Williams College Libraries

MCLA students who wish to borrow books from the Williams College libraries need to speak to an MCLA reference librarian for permission. MCLA faculty need only to present their MCLA ID to borrow books from Williams and do not need prior authorization from an MCLA reference librarian.

Please check their web site for current policies:

InterLibrary Loan:

We can borrow research materials from libraries across the country for MCLA faculty, students and staff. Please speak with a reference librarian if you need to use this service. Not all items can be borrowed. Dissertation, videos, reference materials and rare books may be impossible to borrow. Required course texts (textbooks) cannot be borrowed. Please allow up to two weeks for the successful completion of an ILL request.
