Bank Gallery to Host Exhibition of Small Sculptures, Photography
NORTH ADAMS, MA -- The Bank Gallery, located within the Adams Community Bank, will open an exhibition of art by local artist Laura Christensen and a variety of photographers curated by local artist and recent Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) graduate Kristen Parker on Thursday, Aug. 30.
An opening reception, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, as part of "DownStreet Art Thursday!" The evening will consist of pop-up and permanent gallery openings, live performances, viewings of the new murals, happenings, trolley rides and businesses open late with DownStreet Art specials.
Christensen's small sculptures combine handcrafted wooden boxes and old photographic portraits. She alters the old photographs with miniature hand-painted illusions.
Christensen grew up with traditional rural and midwestern ideals, such as polite actions, hard work and small established communities. These influences expanded to include the metropolitan buzz of New York City, airy valleys and giant peaks of the Rocky Mountains, mysterious woods and rushing rivers of New England, 15th century Italian frescoes, family gatherings, friends and maple syrup.
In addition, at Saint Louis University, she majored in economics and German. At University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, art history was her focus. Then, in 1997, she completed her Masters of Fine Arts degree from Utah State University in Logan, Utah.
In 1990, her first art exhibit opened - a one-person show. Since then she has exhibited many places, including Utah Museum of Fine Arts in Salt Lake City; The Tweed Museum of Art in Duluth, Minn.; the Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester, Vt.; and Offenes Haus Oberwart in Oberwart, Austria. To make ends meet along the way, she has worked as an artist's assistant, waited tables, co-managed an art gallery, and even helped take the 2000 U.S. Census.
She is the visual arts education coordinator at Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), and sometimes works on the museum's art fabrication and installation crew. Christensen also teaches "Introduction to Drawing" at MCLA.
The exhibition runs from Aug. 30 to Sept. 22 in Bank Gallery, 31 Eagle St., in North Adams. The gallery is open Monday-Friday, 8-6 p.m. For more information, go to www.downstreetart.org.
