MCLA Presents! to Kick Off Season with Outdoor Concert

09/15/2010

NORTH ADAMS, MA - Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) announces it will kick off its 2010/11 performance series season with an outdoor concert in the MCLA Quad on Saturday, Sept. 25, at 3 p.m. with "Black Violin in Concert."

This duo of classically trained violinists combines an array of musical styles - including hip hop and classical - to produce "a raucous, rousing, genre-busting performance piece that dares the audience to get up and dance," according to Time Out New York.

Black Violin has backed up artists such as Alicia Keys, P. Diddy and Aerosmith. They also were featured on the television show "CSI: New York," as well as "America's Got Talent" and "So You Think You Can Dance." In addition, their music has appeared in commercials for Coca Cola and Disney.

Touring since 2005, they have performed at over 300 U.S. colleges, opened for Nas, Fabolous, and Kanye West, among many others. Recent festival performances include those at the Urban Rhythm Festival in South Africa and the Bangarang Festival in Germany.

Jamal Ahamad '11, president of the MCLA Dance Company, is looking forward to the event. A longtime Black Violin fan, he has encouraged the College to invite the duo to perform on campus for nearly three years.

"I love Black Violin! What they do is so unique," Ahamad said. "By infusing hip-hop, they make classical music more accessible and more exciting."

The MCLA Dance Company will open this concert event.

"I'm really looking forward to being part of the opening act for Black Violin," Ahamad said. "The Dance Company and I are going to do our best to charge the atmosphere and prepare the stage for our highly anticipated guest."

Black Violin in Concert is co-presented with MCLA's Student Activities Council, the Multicultural Resource Center and many other clubs on campus.

General admission for Black Violin in Concert is $12, $8 for MCLA alumni and $5 for MCLA faculty and staff and non-MCLA students. Members and MCLA students are free. For tickets, call 413-662-5204. For information, call 413-664-8718, or go to www.mcla.edu/presents .
